European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
