Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
