The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
